FAQ's

Here we try to answer some of your most common questions asked....

Q: Why are my soaps individually wrapped?

A: Living in a humid climate can sometimes cause soap to feel slimy or develop a dew-like layer. This happens because glycerin, which is present in our soaps, is a natural humectant that draws moisture from the air. Soaps made through cold process, hot process, or melt-and-pour methods can experience this effect, especially if they have higher glycerin content. To ensure your soap stays dry and fresh until use, we individually wrap each bar, preventing it from absorbing excess moisture. This way, you’ll avoid that slippery feel and enjoy your soap at its best!

Q: Is all that packaging really eco-friendly and sustainable?

A: YES! At Southern Buffalo Mercantile, we take our commitment to the environment seriously. We use biodegradable BPA-free shrink wrap for our soaps, ensuring that even the packaging is kind to the planet. Our boxes are made from either recycled materials or eco-friendly alternative resources that can be reused/recycled again after use. Best of all, our outer shipping mailers and bags are compostable, so they won’t end up in a landfill. We research every product and every company we partner with to ensure that our practices align with our commitment to sustainability. With us, you can feel good about the choices you’re making for your skin and the environment! 🌍💚

Q: How do I store my soap?

A: To extend the life of your soap and maintain its quality, follow these simple storage tips:
1. Keep it dry between uses: Use a soap dish with good drainage to allow your soap to dry completely between uses. This prevents it from becoming soft or mushy.
2. Store unused bars in a cool, dry place: Keep your unused soap bars in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and humidity. A linen closet or drawer works well.
3. Avoid standing water: Never leave your soap sitting in water, as it will dissolve faster and become slimy.
4. Rotate your soap: If you have multiple bars, rotate them occasionally to ensure they stay dry and last longer.
Proper storage will help preserve your soap’s freshness and keep it in great condition for future use!

Q: Why does your soap contain glycerin?

A: Glycerin is a natural byproduct of the soap-making process and is essential for its skin-loving benefits. It acts as a humectant, meaning it helps attract and retain moisture, leaving your skin feeling soft and hydrated after use. Unlike commercial soaps that often remove glycerin, we keep it in our handcrafted soaps to ensure a gentle, moisturizing cleanse that nourishes your skin rather than drying it out. Glycerin is one of the reasons our soaps are luxurious and beneficial for all skin types! Many soap makers will limit the amount of moisture in the bars they make for longevity purposes and it creates a harder bar so it lasts a little longer when in use too. This also allows for easier storage and most non-glycerin bars are not wrapped.
